I would go further. Some well-acclaimed contemporary poetry seems to me to be striving to be clever, for example as if the poet has entered a competition to stuff as many unusual metaphors and similes as possible into a given number of lines. I don’t even call that good.
Me neither. It’s just becomes a convoluted pointless mess and the reason why poetry is so often misunderstood. What’s the point in writing something that nobody will understand?
